Renal service

The Nephrology (Renal) Department at Hereford County Hospital (Wye Valley NHS Trust) is a satellite tertiary care service for care patients who require urgent or routine referrals for outpatient care. Urgent inpatient care is provided initially by an Acute Medical Team with access to the Nephrology Specialism for advice and guidance when it is required..

The regional (Hub) for Nephrology (Renal) services is at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust).  There is 24 hour access to renal services provided by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital UHB NHS Trust and there is also a satellite renal service at Worcester Royal Hospital.

The Renal Outpatient Service is provided for the care of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), familial renal disease, and patients with proteinuria and/or haematuria with probability of underlying renal disease by two visiting Consultant Nephrologists Dr Lukas Foggensteiner and Dr Martin Ferring. working alongside visiting Consultant Nephrologists are Renal Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Tracey Lynch, Renal Dietitian and Renal Administrator Sally James. 

Consultant led clinics take place on Wednesday’s and Friday’s at the Diabetes Centre with the addition of multidisciplinary Renal CNS and Renal Dietitian clinics. 

Renal Replacement Therapy (Dialysis) is provided by UHB NHS Trust, other services provided by UHB NHS Foundation Trust include renal transplant surgery and follow up care, renal biopsy and other specialist investigations, vascular access surgery for haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) access surgery.

Dr Lukas Foggensteiner medically manages patients who attend the satellite haemodialysis units which are located in Hereford and Llandrindod Wells and he also oversees local patients who have chosen peritoneal dialysis.  Dr Foggensteiner also provides local service for renal transplant recipients who are six months plus post renal transplant.

Renal Biopsies can also be carried out by Worcester Royal Hospital NHS Trust for Hereford patients.
