The Minister of State for Health, Philip Dunne, saw the many improvements taking place at Wye Valley NHS Trust during a flying visit to Hereford County Hospital.
The MP had been invited to the hospital by north Herefordshire MP Bill Wiggin following an exchange during a recent parliamentary debate on NHS Sustainability and Transformation Plans.
Mr Wiggin accompanied the minister throughout the visit to the hospital.
Mr Dunne has a particular interest in Hereford County Hospital on two counts – as MP for Ludlow, many of his constituents receive care at the hospital, and he is also the MP with responsibility for hospitals which are in special measures.
“It was a pleasure to welcome the Minister of State to Hereford County Hospital and it was a great opportunity to show him the strides we have been taking to improve the quality of our services,” said Richard Beeken, Wye Valley NHS Trust’s Chief Executive.
“Many of these directly address concerns raised by recent Care Quality Commission inspections, so it was particularly apt that he was able to spend some time here gathering information and seeing first hand some of the improvements we have made.
“As well as an opportunity to talk to the minister, we also took him round the hospital and showed him the new Gilwern Unit for our frail and elderly patients, our Clinical Assessment Unit, our Emergency Department and our Maternity Unit.
“It gave him a taste of life at the hospital as he had time to talk to our frontline staff – the doctors and nurses who are doing an incredible job providing high quality care under immense pressure,” added Richard.
Speaking after the visit, Mr Dunne said: “I was very pleased to have seen first-hand the improvements being introduced and planned in Hereford, such as the new geriatric ward, and to meet some of the frontline staff who are making this happen.
“Clinical leadership at Wye Valley NHS Trust is working to ensure patients are continuing to get the best possible care.”
