Referral criteria and response time

Referrals are accepted for any patient with foot or ankle problem registered with a Herefordshire GP. Cross border cases are dealt with individually and there are good working relationships with Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Gwent and Powys. Referrals from other areas outside of Herefordshire can be accessed though the National Choose and Book System.

Patients must be 16 years of age or over. Referrals are assessed by Podiatric Surgeons and seen in order of clinical priority e.g. high pain, infection or disability; before low pain, little disability, based on triaging of the referrals by the podiatric surgeons.

Treatment priority is based on clinical need. Patients will only be added to the active waiting list if able and willing to proceed to have surgery. Patients' individual needs and home care circumstances are assessed as part of the assessment for suitability for day surgery.
