How the Macmillan Renton Unit was created

Macmillan Renton Unit

The new Macmillan Renton Unit (MRU) is a partnership between Wye Valley NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support (MCS) to provide a new purpose built cancer unit at The County Hospital, Hereford, to promote long term cancer care in a modern environment, better able to meet the needs of patients recovering from cancer.

The project was developed with the support and involvement of a service user group, which included patient representatives, key staff and a public art working group which played an integral part of the building and garden design.

A fundraising appeal for the Macmillan Renton Unit was launched by Macmillan Cancer Support and the people of Herefordshire and surrounding areas responded in a phenomenal manner raising the required funds in double quick time, over £1.7million was raised.

Local fund raising exceeded the original target and was achieved in many different ways including formal fundraising events, corporate support and literally hundreds of individual activities throughout the community.

Wye Valley NHS Trust contributed £959,000.00 to the new facility, with Macmillan Cancer Support contributing nearly £2.7 million of which £1.7 million was raised through local fundraising, with the total cost of the project at £4.8 million, including additional enabling works by Wye Valley NHS Trust.

Wye Valley NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to the Macmillan Renton Unit, particularly the people of Herefordshire, without whose generosity this project would not have been possible.

The building work for the cancer unit started in October 2009, and a turf cutting ceremony was held to mark this event. Followed by the completion of the roof and associated ‘Topping Out ceremony’ in November 2010.

In May 2011, Wye Valley NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support celebrated the receipt of the keys of the new multi-million pound local cancer unit.

In the weeks leading up to the opening on 4th July 2011, hospital staff finalised arrangements to move into the new cancer unit and prepared the building ready to receive its first patients.

In October 2011, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Lady Darnley, performed the official opening of the Macmillan Renton Unit.
