Services Offered

Ward Services

Medical and nursing care to preterm and sick newborn infants until discharge to home.

Outline of the Department

The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) is a Level 1+ unit with 12 cots

SCBU is located on level 2 of the county hospital site adjacent to the maternity unit and opposite the Childrens unit. The service works in partnership with Southern West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.

The unit provides intensive care, high dependency care and special care to newborn babies who are born 30 weeks gestation and above (for singletons) and 32 weeks gestation and above (for multiples). Newborns born earlier than 30 weeks are transferred to a regional Local Neonatal Unit (Level 2) or a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level 3) for specialist care until they can return to Hereford for ongoing care. If a baby is born at Hereford unexpectedly before 30 weeks, the unit provides resuscitation and stabilisation services and the infant is retrieved by our regional designated Transport Service and transferred to a regional centre as described above. SCBU facilities include a quiet feeding room, sitting room, kitchen, toilet facilities, sibling play area, breast pump hire and written parent information on all aspects of neonatal care.

We are very committed to our philosophy of care in that each baby is an individual and is cared for in partnership with his/her family to include physical, emotional, social and psychological needs to facilitate a transition to his/her new home as smoothly as possible. The unit staff work closely with the community health care professionals to allow this streamlined approach.
