Lymphoedema service overview

The Lymphoedema Service aims to offer an equitable countywide service to those affected with primary lymphoedema and lymphoedema secondary to cancer based on British Lymphology Society (BLS) Best Practice Standards.

We provide a comprehensive and dedicated Lymphoedema Service, working to:

• Provide holistic assessment, treatment and psycho-social support for patients
• Together improve the function and quality of life, empowering and equipping you with self-care skills and ongoing support
• We aim to reduce the risk of lymphoedema related cellulitis infection which can require hospital admission
• Ensure there is equity in access to a uniform high standard of care provided locally and appropriate to your needs.

We aim to provide support and advice to members of the wider disciplinary team including district nurses, practice nurses and GPs in Herefordshire. 

We work as an integrated team with the Breast Care Nurses and Gynaecology Nurses with lymphoedema being one of the main links between our mutual patients.  

Referral criteria

• Congenital Primary Lymphoedema
• Lymphoedema Secondary to cancer
• Palliative Patients with Lymphoedema

Patients will require a written referral from a health professional to the Lymphoedema Service. 

NOTE: Patients with lower limb chronic oedema should be referred to the Complex Lower Limb Service

If a patient’s condition does not meet our service criteria we are happy to give advice via telephone. 

Lymphodema team 

The Lymphodema team is a nurse led service comprising of three part-time Lymphodema clinical nurse specialists.
