How long do I have to continue taking my Rheumatology medication? Can it ever be stopped?

  • Similar to other chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, inflammatory arthritis also requires long term medication.
  • The aim of the medication is to get you Rheumatology condition into remission, which means a significant reduction in the symptoms of inflammation, however it doesn’t necessarily mean that the condition has gone away.
  • The more aggressively we treat inflammatory arthritis initially, the more likely we are to achieve and maintain remission.
  • In some cases, we may be able to reduce the medication to a minimum dose that keeps your Rheumatology condition under good control.
  • If your flares increase in frequency or severity we will need to adjust or escalate your treatment.
