I have an INFECTION, what should I do about my Rheumatology medication?

  • If you develop symptoms of an infection, such as a new cough, fever, or shortness of breath, we suggest that you stop your Rheumatology medication, EXCEPT steroids (Prednisolone), Hydroxychloroquine and Sulfasalazine(please note Sulfasalazine may need to be stopped if you have a serious infection or require a hospital admission).
  • See Rheumatology medication table above to know what medication to stop whilst you have an infection.
  • Trimethoprim and Co-trimoxazole (Septrin) must never be taken with Methotrexate.
  • Once you feel well again and finished the course of antibiotics (if required), you should restart your Rheumatology medications.
