Service overview
The Health Psychology Service provides specialist psychology services for people affected by Acquired Brain Injury, Stroke, Cancer, Palliative Care and Long-Term Physical Health Conditions. We provide psychological support through individual, couple, or sometimes family sessions, through groups, and by advising and supporting other services. We use a range of psychological approaches, and are staffed by clinical psychologists and an assistant psychologist with administrative support.
These service pathways aim to help people enjoy a better quality of life, and to live well with the challenges that physical health difficulties can bring. This typically involves helping people with some of the difficult thoughts, feelings and choices that come with living with physical health difficulties.
We see individuals who are registered with a Herefordshire GP. Some specific services also have an arrangement in place for seeing people from Gwent, Powys or other counties.
2026 Update: Long Term Conditions Service
Please be aware that due to recent changes within our Health Psychology team, we are not currently able to offer provision into the Long Term Conditions Service and have had to close this pathway. We anticipate a gap in service until New Year 2027 when we aim to re-open the service. We will be reviewing this situation over the coming months, and of course, if we are in a position to re-open the pathway sooner, we will do so.
In the meantime, please be aware that engaging with the local NHS Talking Therapies Service may be worth considering: www.talkingtherapies.hwhct.nhs.uk
Please be aware that if difficulties are more concerned with mental health problems not specifically related to physical health (for example, low mood, depression, anxiety, stress etc.), local mental health service providers Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust offer services that will be a better fit for these needs – please click here for more information. In addition, if you are worried about your own, or someone else’s mental health and wellbeing you can also contact NHS 111, or in the event of an emergency 999.
