New Chair appointed for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (WAHT) and Wye Valley NHS Trust (WVT)

Two NHS Trusts serving Herefordshire and Worcestershire have confirmed the appointment of Frances Martin as their new Chair, effective from April 1.

Frances, who currently serves as Vice Chair for Wye Valley NHS Trust, will take up the Chair role across Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (WAHT) and Wye Valley NHS Trust (WVT).

She succeeds Russell Hardy, who steps down as Chairman of the Foundation Group of Trusts – comprising WAHT, WVT, South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust and George Eliot NHS Trust – at the end of the month.

A highly respected non-executive member of the joint board since 2021, Frances brings extensive leadership experience across health and social care.

Originally training as a mental health nurse, she built a 40-year career spanning acute, ambulance, community and primary care services, working in operational, regulatory, commissioning and strategic roles.

Her experience also includes two years as sales and operations director in a manufacturing company, strengthening her insight into the opportunities and risks faced by small businesses.

After taking early retirement in 2018, and prior to her appointment to the Wye Valley Board, Frances worked as an independent consultant in the health sector with a focus on strategy, governance, and organisational and personal development.

Speaking following the announcement of her appointment, Frances said: “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as Chair of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Wye Valley NHS Trust.

“I believe we are on a clear journey of improvement that is already delivering real benefits for patients and staff.

“I’m keen to build on the legacy and strong foundations laid under the leadership of Russell Hardy, whose chairmanship has helped the Trusts flourish.

“Both Trusts have a strong culture of innovation and improvement, and I look forward to supporting and strengthening that as we continue to work with partners to deliver modern, high-quality care – the kind we would all want for our own friends and family.”

Glen Burley, Foundation Group Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted to confirm that Frances Martin has been appointed as the new Chair of both Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Wye Valley NHS Trust, with effect from 1 April 2026.

“Frances brings significant experience in NHS leadership, a strong commitment to collaborative working, and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our organisations.

“Her appointment marks an important moment as we continue to strengthen the Foundation Group approach across our Trusts.

“I look forward to working closely with Frances as she supports our boards, our teams and our wider partners to deliver high‑quality care for the communities we serve.”
