A brand-new operating theatre at Hereford County Hospital has welcomed its first patients, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve access to care, reduce waiting times and provide modern facilities for patients across Herefordshire and surrounding areas.
On Tuesday 20 October proud parent and Trust staff welcomed Nay Kaleb Gilboy born via elective caesarean at 9.45am, weighing 4.6kg, who is the first baby to be born in the new theatre at Hereford County Hospital.
The £5.5 million investment, funded by Wye Valley NHS Trust, has been developed in response to growing demand for planned surgical care and a recognised need for additional theatre capacity at the hospital.
The new purpose-built facility, accessed within the main operating theatre area, supports a range of procedures, including planned gynaecology/obstetric procedures and general surgery, helping more patients to receive treatment closer to home and reduce the amount of time they wait for surgery.
The new theatre suite features the latest cutting-edge equipment, operating theatre, anaesthetic room, and a dedicated recovery room.
By creating dedicated theatre capacity for obstetrics and gynaecology services, the development will help to improve patient flow across the hospital, reduce pressure on existing operating theatres, and support the separation of planned and emergency surgery wherever possible. This will help to ensure patients receive timely, high-quality care in a modern environment designed specifically to meet their needs.
The project forms part of the Trust's wider commitment to investing in local healthcare services, improving patient experiences, and ensuring services can meet the needs of a growing population.
Alan Dawson, chief strategy and planning officer at Wye Valley NHS Trust, said: "We’re delighted to welcome our first patients to this new operating theatre at Hereford County Hospital.
"This investment reflects our commitment to providing the highest standards of care for the communities we serve. By increasing our theatre capacity, we will be able to treat more patients locally, reduce waiting times and improve access to important surgical procedures.
"The new theatre provides a modern, purpose-built environment that has been designed with patient safety, quality and experience at its heart. It will be particularly beneficial for patients requiring elective caesarean procedures and planned gynaecology procedures, helping to ensure they receive timely care in facilities tailored to their needs.
"As demand for healthcare continues to grow, developments such as this are essential in helping us provide safe, effective and compassionate care both now and for the future."
The new theatre plays an important role in enhancing the hospital's surgical services, supporting more efficient use of existing facilities and helping ensure patients can access the care they need, when they need it.
James Pearson, Managing Director, Darwin Group, said: “Seeing the theatre become operational is a proud moment for everyone involved. Knowing that the facility has already supported the arrival of its first baby makes this milestone even more special.
"We're delighted to have worked alongside Wye Valley NHS Trust to deliver a facility that will provide much-needed additional capacity and make a positive difference to maternity services in Herefordshire over the coming years."
