Service Overview

The primary aims of the service are:

  • To ensure a high quality service is delivered to families with children suffering from a wide variety of developmental disorders and disabilities, by taking a lead role in the assessment, diagnosis and management of these conditions
  • To ensure a high quality service to children in need of protection through the role of Named Doctor for Child Protection
  • To ensure a high quality service to children in care through the role of Medical Advisor for Adoption and Fostering
  • To work alongside other health and social care providers to provide the highest standard of care of children and families particularly those requiring complex packages of care and support for children
  • To support children and families of children with life-limiting conditions in line with national good practice
  • To provide information and advice to colleagues in Education in relation to a child's special educational needs arising from any medical condition

Accessibility/acceptability

  • Children are seen with their carers at a variety of venues in Herefordshire, including the Child Development Centre, Community Hospitals, and Hereford County Hospital paediatric outpatients department
  • There are outreach clinics at community hospitals in Herefordshire
  • Children attending special schools are seen in school with their parent / carer
  • Where appropriate clinical facilities are available, children can be seen at Children's Centres and other community venues
  • Children in special circumstances e.g. those with severe complex problems or in need of palliative care can be seen at home

Population Served

Those living in Herefordshire or registered with a Herefordshire GP and those who choose to use our service with exception of:

  • Acute safeguarding assessments (these should be directed to Hereford Hospital on-call paediatrician)
  • Children requiring acute paediatric or inpatient care(these should be directed to Hereford Hospital on-call paediatrician)
  • Young people over 18 years of age
