History of the MRU

The Macmillan Renton Unit (MRU) was created as a partnership between Wye Valley NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support (MCS) to provide a purpose built cancer unit at The County Hospital, Hereford, to promote long term cancer care in a modern environment, better able to meet the needs of patients recovering from cancer.  The unit was funded through a public fundraising appeal, and by Macmillan Cancer Support and Wye Valley NHS Trust.  The MRU opened to patients in 2011.

The naming of the MRU included the name ‘Renton’ in recognition of the late Charles James Crawford Renton(1930 – 2007) who came to Hereford as a General Surgeon with an interest in vascular and breast surgery in 1969 and worked at the County Hospital until retiring in 1995. He was a highly respected and dedicated clinician, teacher and colleague.  The previous Charles Renton Unit at Hereford County Hospital had been named after him and this was transferred across to the new MRU when it opened in 2011 by including ‘Renton’ within the unit name in his honour.
