Renal service

The renal service at Hereford County Hospital (Wye Valley NHS Trust) is an outreach service from the regional (Hub) renal services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust); there is also a satellite renal service at Worcester Royal Hospital.

The Renal Outpatient Service is provided for the care of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) by visiting Consultant Nephrologists Dr Lukas Foggensteiner and Dr Martin Ferring.  Working alongside visiting Consultant Nephrologists are Renal Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Tracey Lynch, Renal Dietitian Hayley Roberts, Renal Dietitian Joanna Clutterbuck and Renal Administrator Sally James.

Consultant led clinics take place on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Diabetes Centre; with the recent addition of multidisciplinary Renal CNS and Renal Dietitian clinics.

There is 24 hour access to renal services provided by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital UHB NHS Trust.

Renal Replacement Therapy (Dialysis) is provided by UHB NHS Trust, other services provided by UHB NHS Trust include renal transplant surgery and follow up care, renal biopsy and other specialist investigations, vascular access surgery for haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) access surgery.

Dr Lukas Foggensteiner medically manages patients who attend the satellite haemodialysis units which are located in Hereford and Llandridod Wells and he also oversees local patients who have chosen peritoneal dialysis.  Dr Foggensteiner also provides local service for renal transplant recipients who are one year plus post renal transplant.

Renal Biopsies can also be carried out by Worcester Royal Hospital NHS Trust for Hereford patients.
