Urology

The Urology department deals with both male and female urinary and genital problems which might require medical or surgical treatment.

Wye Valley NHS Trust is part of the Three Counties Cancer Network and all patients are discussed at a Multidisciplinary Team meeting with Pathology, Radiology and Oncology colleagues.

Outline of the department

The department consists of four consultants, six clinical nurse specialists in urology (Cancer and Benign Urology), a urology junior sister, an assistant practitioner, four secretaries, three assistant medical secretaries, a urology cancer support worker and five health care assistants.

Urology clinics

The urology diagnostic and treatment centre is based on site at Hereford County Hospital where most urology clinics take place. We care for both male and female patients with malignant and benign urological conditions. We run specialist clinics for the following:

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)
Kidney Stones
Female Functional Urology
Prostate Cancer Follow Up (Face to Face, Telephone and on a Patient Stratified Follow Up (PSFU) Pathway)
Urology Surveillance/ Post treatment follow up
General Urology
Erectile dysfunction secondary to pelvic cancer diagnosis

We also carry out specialist urological procedures within the department, which include:

Flexible Cystoscopy
Local Anaesthetic Trans- Perineal Prostate Biopsies (LATPB)
Urodynamic Studies
Lithotripsy
Flow and Scan Tests

This appointment is usually made from a referral from your GP. If this is the first time that we see you please expect that we may ask to take your blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturations, height and weight. You may also be asked to bring in a list of your medications or a urine sample. This will be outlined on your appointment letter. For your first appointment this may be in the urology One Stop Clinic, which includes investigations for:

Visible or Non- Visible Haematuria (Bleeding in the Urine).
Suspected Prostate Cancer
Testicular Mass/ swelling / pain
Suspected Kidney Cancer
Suspected Penile Cancer

For this appointment you may be with us for a few hours while we can get a full range of investigations complete in one clinic appointment. Please note that this clinic will see a wide range of patients and the professionals available will include: A Urology Consultant, Urology Registrar, Urology Nurse Specialist and Sonographer. This may mean that each patient will be seen at a slightly different time dependent on their needs. The investigations usually needed are dependant on your presenting complaint may include:

Visible or Non- Visible Haematuria (Bleeding in the Urine) - Observations, Ultrasound Scan (Unless you have recently had another scan such as a CT scan), Urine Sample, Flexible Cystoscopy, Bloods.
Suspected Prostate Cancer - Observations, Clinician Appointment, Bloods
Testicular Mass/ swelling / pain - Observations, Ultrasound Scan, Clinician Appointment, Bloods
Suspected Kidney Cancer - Observations, Clinician Appointment, Bloods
Suspected Penile Cancer - Observations, Clinician Appointment, Bloods

Please note this is only a guide, a clinician will review your case and ensure you are booked in for the correct investigations during your appointment.

Wye Valley NHS Trust is part of the Three Counties Cancer Network. If you are undergoing investigations for suspected urological cancer then this will all go through out ‘MDT’ (Multi-disciplinary Team Meeting) with pathologists, radiologists, urology consultants, urology specialist nurses, cancer support workers and oncology colleagues.

Urology surgery

All urology surgery is carried out in specialist urology theatres. You will be seen by a urologist prior to your operation date to discuss the procedure. You then may need additional investigations such as scans and blood tests. After this you will be added to the waiting list and a pre-operative appointment will be requested. You will not usually get a date for your operation until you have been seen in the pre-operative assessment clinic.
