What we do
Children’s Physiotherapy is a specialist community physiotherapy service for babies, children and young people living in Herefordshire. Children’s physiotherapists have additional knowledge and experience of child development and childhood disabilities.
Children’s physiotherapists are responsible for the assessment and physical rehabilitation of children and young people who are identified as having difficulties with the development of gross motor skills and mobility as a result of accident, injury, disease or disability. They also see children with specific conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, gait anomalies and life-limiting conditions.
Children’s’ physiotherapists use a variety of tools to assess a child’s physical needs and their level of functioning. Goals of treatment are set in discussion with parents/carers and children and physiotherapy programmes are devised to work towards those goals.
Children and young people may be seen in a variety of settings including clinics, homes, nurseries and schools to ensure that the child’s physical needs are understood, and carers are supported in developing the skills and knowledge they need to maximise the child’s independence and physical functioning.
Children’s physiotherapists work in partnership with children, families and carers, education, social services and other health professionals to ensure better outcomes for the children.
About the children’s physiotherapy team
The team is made up of six physiotherapists and one part-time physiotherapy assistants and part-time administrative support.
The normal hours of the team are: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Appropriate referrals are accepted into the paediatric physiotherapy service for any baby, child or young person from 0 to 18 years old with a Herefordshire GP by any professional involved with the child. We do not currently accept self-referrals.
Cross border or out of county referrals are dealt with on an individual basis.
We receive a high number of referrals and currently have a wait time of up to 10 months for a routine referral. Please provide us with as much information as possible in order to prioritise each referral correctly. We also have a resources page on our intranet page which has useful information for referrers, including information leaflets for families and professionals.
Our referral process has changed and all referrals must now be made directly to our team using our new referral form below.
Completed forms should be emailed to our secure NHS.net email account; firstname.lastname@example.org
If you are unsure if a referral to our team is needed please contact us and we will be happy to discuss this with you.
